HSE Student Team Reaches Final of the World Championship in Programming
The HSE team in sport programming has taken part in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest NEERC and reached the final. The Northeastern European Regional Contest 2013 On Programming (NEERC) was held in Saint Petersburg, Barnaul, Tbilisi, and Tashkent on November 30 - December 1, 2013. The HSE team, known as the ‘Viral Team’, included three students from the School of Applied Mathematics and Information Science Vyacheslav Alipov, Mikhail Kolupaev, and Alexander Kuprin. According to the rules, each team is given a number of tasks to complete on a computer within five hours. The team which solves the most tasks, wins.
Following a fierce battle in the semifinal, the HSE students came seventh out of the 250 teams which entered the contest. The team got a winners’ certificate and the right to represent the HSE in the contest grand final. It is the best result ever achieved by HSE students in programming contests. These results helped the HSE rise in the rating for sport programming development in universities NEERC-2013 from 31st to 8th place.
As Sergei Kuznetsov, Head of the School of Applied Mathematics and Information Science, noted, the students showed an extremely high level of both abstract and logical thinking, knowledge of complicated algorithms, and the skills to quickly write effective codes. They managed to solve eight tasks, the same as the overall winners, Saint Petersburg State University, but came second in terms of time.
